An Eco Fashion Week favourite, Sarah Couture (yes, that is her real last name) has recently open a pop-up store in the heart of Gastown just in time to refresh your summer wardrobe. Designed with right here in Vancouver, House of Couture is focused on the belief that ethical and sustainable womenswear can also be fashionable and affordable.
Couture believes that a high price tag doesn't guarantee quality and that ethical fashion can be made affordably. Couture has used her 15+ years of experience in the fashion industry to build relationships with the best manufacturer combined with selling her line directly to the customer online or via pop-ups to pass along the savings usually lost in traditional retail markup.
Personal pick: If you go in and only have time to try on one item, make it the Ella Pant. Comprised of 55% linen these pants are made to become an instant wardrobe staple. The Ella features a high rise ruffled waist, side pockets (that are actually functional pockets) and an elastic waistband (bring on them donuts).
Ethically priced at $165 CAD. A similar pair of THE GREAT. linen pants (also 55% linen) at Nordstrom are priced at $218 CAD (and that's on sale, marked down 40% off from $364 CAD. Both pants feature 55% linen, a high rise tied waist, pockets and a cuff hemmed but only one of them saves you close to $200 on the retail costs and helps contribute to the local community because it is designed and made locally.
